Pick where you want to live and then go into the school district, they rate their own schools. Like here in Wake County, Raleigh, Cary, they rate them.
A local realtor is not allowed because of Fair Housing to tell you.
Where do you want to live?

Good locations and good schools vary by your opinion, where you work, what you want in a town, the type of home you want and your price range.
You could ask a Realtor or coworkers for their opinions and check the Illinois school websites. Most Realtors have links to these on their sites.

START on the internet, but finish your research by talking to the residents - very important.

I would look at the 2 below.
www.city-data.com It also has a forum where people can ask ans answer questions about their area. Utilize that ability.
www.zipskinny.com
Regarding Michael's reply below that only covers cities (yuck) not towns and only 50,000+ population areas.

Big question. Some publications, such as US News & World Reports and Money Magazine rate them annually.
