Ask your friends and neighbors and check NARI (National Association of Remodeling Industry) website for a listing of good local contractors.

Good luck!

Start with your local trusted Realtor and ask friends for recommendations. Ask to check out their work before you enter into any contract and shop around. Good luck.

Another source to find a reputable contractor is to check with NARI (National Association of Remodeling Industry) as well as the California Contractors Licensing Board.  When you find a contractor you like, no matter the source you located them through, check up on them by asking the Contractor Board is the contractor you selected is currently licensed (for they type of job you will have them perform).  Also ask the Better Business Bureau if they have any complaints logged against the contractor and ask the contractor to see their current insurance documents.  A contractor whom may have done a great job several years back may not be on solid footing anymore.  There are many many good contractors, and just as many bad ones, so spend a little time up front doing homework on the contractor you select to save you headaches in the future.

Your best friend's kitchen or dining room.
At a friend of a friend's house.
At your neighbor's house.
At the local building association (Master Builders)
On Angie's list or Yelp.
At the local lumber store.  I'll exclude the big box stores.
At an architect's office.

Take awhile to get to know them.
See as many of their projects as you can stand.
Have lunch together and find out what they talk about.
Talk to them about how they build their agreements.
Dismiss anyone who thinks that the whole project has to be on a T&M basis.  There are lots of aspects that can be bid and that makes the window of risk much smaller.

Never start with a contractor. Start with a designer / architect. If you have drawings to work from of your specific design - acquiring uniform bids is then an effective starting point. THEN find recommendations from others of which contractors to send the drawings to.

This is the method by which you have the most control.

I've found that the best sources for contractors are recommendations from friends or neighbors who've actually used the contractor or recommendations from a reliable realtor. Realtors frequently have lists of contractors they recommend because realtors have to find various contractors to make repairs on homes and also because many realtors offer those sorts of recommendations to clients and friends. You're welcome to contact me if you'd like such a recommendation.
