Agents hands are kind of tied when it comes to talking about safety, types of residents, area incomes and other things about communities due to Fair Housing Law. Some will tell you that upfront, others dance around it feeling like the buyer will feel that they should provide that info, but under the law they can't.
I might try posting your question on city-data.com here for Redwood City and/or in San Mateo here also. The forum questions are located just under the first pie chart on the page and offer a lot of local perspective from people that live there is good helpful street level information like this thread here. You can get crime information from a map site like this one here or by seeing if the local police department have it available online.
Moving is tough and relocating from NJ to the SF Bay area will be an adjustment. Redwood city is an easy commute and is a more suburban feeling place to me while San Mateo seems like it is busier and has more bustle at least in the areas that come to mind. What is the neighborhood like where you live now and what are some of your must haves, hates or concerns? Also are you both planning to drive in or it is an area where you can take public transit? If you are willing to post a little more information, agents may be able to give you more detailed ideas or opinions about outlying communities that might fit.

Thanks Tap, one question regarding Millbrae - on Google Map it looks right next to SFO, in fact directly at the end of a runway - won't noise be an issue?

Thank you for getting back to us. I would suggest Millbrae, Burlingame, Certain areas of San Mateo (West of El Camino), Belmont and San Carlos. There are good pockets in RWC also, like Mt. Carlmel that would fit your budget and are areas you are accustomed to.
Since you are new to the area, a good rule of thumb would be to be West of El Camino Real.
Also, since real estate is so expensive here, you may decide to rent first to get acclimated to the area. If so, I can refer you to a good rental agent.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the info, I'd definitely try those sites. We've always lived in upper middle class suburban neighborhoods with very safe streets and well kept yards. We will be looking for a 3 br single family home, or townhouse without a common/shared wall, price range could be around $800K. Serenity/quietness is a key factor and we'd consider 55+ community. We prefer to drive to work but transit is OK if parking is not a problem.

Appreciate your replies. Our kids are grown and out of the house so school is not a concern, but in terms of safety, quality of life, etc., how do these twons compare?

If you are looking for something that would be in the middle for both of you, try San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, or you can go further North like Millbrae or San Bruno.
If you provided your search criteria, it would help. Like how many bed and baths do you need, your price range and if schools are important.
Cheers.
