Hands down, I would say wood floors. I work exclusively with buyers and time and time again, flooring catches their eye before most features.  Nice wood flooring should help you sell your home.

If it is an "either-or" decision . . . the wooden flooring for your main living areas would definitely be the home improvement which would have more impact and bring you the greatest return on your investment . . .  both financially AND aesthetically!  Good luck!

This is a bit tough to answer without more detail, but in general I would say flooring is going to have the greater impact.  Is budget the reason you are only choosing one of these?    Why are these the only two options being considered?

Good luck with your decision.

The majority of my business has been in the remodeling of older homes. A general rule of thumb in my area is going with solid wood floors hands down - in a newer or older home. Wood floors can balance other 'tired' elements of a home.

I believe a back splash only in the kitchen likely wouldn't recoup the investment. So much depends on the rest of the kitchen - ie cabinets, counters, appliances.

Good luck with your improvements.

Depends on the type of backsplash...granite?  Depends on the wood floors...true wood or laminate....
