It depends on who you ask and where their most passionate about. For us, it's about "return on investment" and while we love contributing as much as we can here on Zillow, our greatest return is via Active Rain. Our Blogging efforts have actually translated into dollars, not to mention the plethora of informative and relevant articles and Bloggers to learn from.

Zillow has it's benefits too but unless you're a Premier Agent (which like many agents, we can't afford right now) or Zillow All-Star - it gives our listings more exposure, provides us with cool reports for our clients and allows us to be seen as a local-expert by contributing to the Q&A section. We like it.

Perhaps the real answer is all of the above. Some agents post on (alphabetically) on Active rain, Trulia, & zillow. They may even post on more sites like facebook.

Naturally some will prefer one site or another. Some will use as many sites as possible to get the best exposure for themselves.

My vote is for ActiveRain too.  It's a great network of people who are very helpful.  I have had good results from consumers who found my blog.

Zillow lacks that community feeling.  Any leads I have gotten from Zillow have been dead ends so far.

But in this day and age you have to try and cover all bases and be visible wherever you can on the internet.

So whatever works for you is the one that you'll stick with.

I think it is hard to compare the two, since they offer different services.

Active Rain is basically a blogging network, that offers networking among real estate professionals.  Personally, I am a huge fan of blogging and think that when one puts effort into it, blogging can be wildly successful.  You just have to decide on the platform that works best for you (my blog is with AR).

Zillow is more of a consumer website where agents can market their listings, themselves and their knowledge through forums (Advice). For someone who isn't into the committment that comes with writing a blog, it is a great way to still reach a lot of people.

I don't think it is necessarily an either/or in my view.  I think both blogging and consumer sites should be a big part of an agent's marketing strategy.

Sara beat me to it.  :-) I think they both rank high (depending on who you ask) and they both offer different "value-added" services and resources to both Industry professionals and consumers.  It's like comparing or asking which is better, the apple or the orange?  I love ALL fruit so I'd say both~  :)

Can somebody name what the results have being from being a Active Rain member, outcomes and the like. And once you are a member what would you suggest to do. I am new to the site so I want to follow those who have being successful.

Brad?  That pic looks a lot like the Brad I first saw at AR in 2007 - all suited up with tie and slick hair, working for a title company.  Not the human looking Brad who played a mean guitar and wore a t-shirt.  What a shame you can't just be yourself.  The real value of you is far more than the sum of your parts.  How many years will it take to go full circle again?  I wish you the best in your new career.

My sense is that they are two very different platforms. ActiveRain provides more Realtor oriented real estate information which is also often of interest to consumers, where Zillow provides free home listing searches and free home price comps. Both will attract prospects. If I were to venture a guess, Active Rain prospects are probably going to have a higher conversion rate, because they are responding to specific subject matter. In an active market, Zillow will probably draw more leads, because a lot of people are following housing values, whether or not they are actively in the market.

They are simply different. Active Rain is personal development. You'll be EXTRAORDINARILY LUCKY TO EVER MAKE MONEY ON ACTIVE RAIN. Zillow on the other hand you will make money on if you are persistent. Active rain is prolly better if your just looking totalk to other brokers.
