Which states have the highest and lowest property tax?

I'm thinking of buying a home and this issue is important to me.

Here in New Hampshire property tax rates vary dramatically by town.  For example, in my town the rate is over $30 per $1000 of assessed value.  Down the road it's around $20, and in some towns it's under $10.  I don't know that it varies that much in other states, but I would certainly look carefully at the actual tax rate in the specific town (or county, if that's relevant) in which you are thinking about buying.  Don't just go by a list which ranks the states because in some states, any average number is meaningless.  This list says that home owners in NH, on average, pay 1.86% of their home's value in property taxes... I'm at about 3.1%.

It is a bit cumbersome to depict each state and county, but this article is a good starting point
