Alicia,
Here's a great website that you can compare different areas in Honolulu.  http://www.bestplaces.net
Since your question is very subjective, and depending on what's important to you in a town this site may help you find what is best for you.

Aloha,
Kristi

Hi Alicia,

Best places to live in Honolulu in my opinion are base on price per sq ft of living space.

Diamond Head, Kahala >>>> http://goo.gl/79ca7R

Kailua>>>>>> http://goo.gl/It3wmO

Best is a very subjective term. Some of my favorite areas to sell homes are:

Mililani: Great central location, no flood insurance requirement, lots of family activities and great schools.
Aiea: As close to Honolulu as you can get without being in Honolulu, close to the Pearl Ridge Mall.
Kapolei: Prices are lower, houses are newer but traffic can be a deal breaker for some.
Kaneohe: Close to town, lots of green and great beaches.

Everyone will have different ideas about what makes life on Oahu amazing but these are some of the best areas for me.

Best really is a personal term.
It depends what you are looking for.
I agree that Kapolei would be the best as far as a future investment... the prices are affordable, the city is growing by leaps and bounds, it has easy highway access for commuting and a lot of shopping.
If you want to live near the best beaches, North Shore, Kailua, and Makaha all have beautiful, pristine beaches. Makaha is the least crowded and most affordable for beachfront property, but it is a far drive from major city shopping.
If you want nightlife/city life, Honolulu is the best place.
If you want mainland-style shops and neighborhoods, you will like Mililani and Ewa. These areas are close to many of the military bases.
If you enjoy boating you would prefer Kaneohe and Hawaii Kai. Kaneohe is the cheaper of the two for homes.

People are diverse and there are limitless items they look for when deciding where they want to live. I hope some of this description helps.

Kapolei is growing leaps and bounds and is still affordable. Close to all the bases, beaches and shopping. If you would like more info. Please go to my website at [link removed by Zillow moderator]

I was stationed on Oahu for 3 1/2 years on Schofield Barracks.  I just left last year, I would say there are a few areas that could be defined by best around Honolulu.  Hawaii Kai is absolutely beautiful, pricey, but beautiful.  I have some family that lives there.  The waters on the K-bay (Kaneohe) are the best I've seen while I was there.  Waikiki is more overrun by tourists, college kids, and military personnel, and don't forget the tent city of homeless people across from the zoo.  Turtle Bay area in North Shore is a good spot as well.  Hope this helps.
