If you are living in a multi-unit building with a common dumpster or trash shute, then you use utilize that method of trash removal. 

If you are in a single family home or condo, you should determine if the trash is being picked up by the community in the HOA dues paid by the property owner or the city and is being paid for in owner's property taxes.

Trash removal is normally NOT considered a "utility" and is a service

I have to agree that if there was not a specific mention of who would be responsible, it would be the "renter" and not the landlord.  Hope this helps!

Normally, with an unwritten month to month lease, the garbage is the responsibility of the tenant.
