If you look closely, some of the listings say "foreclosure" and not "house for sale." Many times these homes are not listed yet.
Another problem is that the status is not reflected properly. Sometimes our internal status may be "contingent" or "pending lender approval," but Zillow still shows those as active listings.
I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually.
In the meantime, a good agent can keep you updated with the newest listings out there. The best ones don't last long.

some areas are not connected to the mls in the area, some are dependant on the broker actually turning the property from active to pending or sold, I have found my self having to go in days or weeks after a property has sold to place it "sold" so I will not get anymore emails or calls from the site..

It is because in Chicagoland, Zillow does pay the money for a direct IDX feed of listings from the Realtor MLS, so you only see an outdated fraction of the real inventory.... My own website is an IDX feed site.

Zillow is not syndicated with the MLS so it's listings are outdated frequently. Try realtor.com or my web site if you want miore 'real time' data if you are not ready to work with an agent.

Alot of realty sites have outdated information that serves as lead generators for the agents. Zillow is better than most, with that said, you get the best info working with an agent who sets up a detailed MLS search based on your specific criteria and preferences. I'd be happy to help you with that if interested.
Good luck,
Greg

Matt is correct. The information comes from a third party and or the sellers themselves in some cases. In others it "magically" appears, at least that is what some of the home owners have claimed.
Find a buyers agent, their services to you are at no charge. Your buyers agent can set up a search where all the 'CURRENT' listings that match your criteria/needs come to you, not the other way around.
Start with the agents that responded right here on Zillow.
Good luck!

Zillow has a problem with this. Most listings on here come from a third party website. This makes them dated. If your serious about buying get a good buyers agent. This way they can send you listings through the MLS. These are active listings.

I hate to hear that. Hope this is not true.

Why are majority of the listings out dated and no longer available?
