Why are townhomes listed along with single family homes? My search clogs with THs.

I've found a decent hack for this..   ask for a house with at least 5000 sq.ft. lot..  that will exclude most townhomes (and any single family home that is almost a town home). 

Now if only I could exclude shares of a house ...

Probably due to limitations in Zillow search parameter, because single family homes and townhomes are independently owned real estate (as opposed to to condos, which have shared (%) ownership). If you work with a local realtor, he or she can utilize MLS software features that will exclude the townhomes, and alert you only to new single family listings and market changes.
