Why do I want to rescue old houses in disrepair?

Profile picture for Kaye Norenberg
I just finished restoring our 1930's Cape Cod and now I find out an old historic house that I have always admired will be available soon.  If renovated correctly it could be a show stopper but right now needs a lot of TLC and $$$'s.  Is there anybody else out there that feels like do about century homes?

Absolutely!  My husband & I have done several now. Luckily he's a  builder with no limits on imagination when he looks at a home in great despair. First he focuses on the foundation. Once a few years ago, he discovered a cape cod we'd purchased to remodel was an authentic SEARS home that was shipped in sections. Some of the old timers in the area were happy to stop by and tell us what they remembered about it's origin. A client found pictures in the attic while restoring and was thrilled to find family who appreciated the treasures.  Yes, know Exactly how you feel....Go girl!

Paul,
I love it!  If you buy it look into Columbia Gas' Home Performance Solutions.  It is a rebate program for energy reducing improvements.  We had insulation blown in the walls, attic, caulking and weather stripping.  We paid $330 for the work after all the rebates. I have not seen the gas bill since the work was done but do notice that the boiler does not come on as often.  Also the Cleveland Restoration Society is an incredible and free resource.

I know what you mean.  My wife and I have been looking at new constuction for 2 months and finally looked at this place because she always wanted to live in a pink doll house.
Barbie Mansion
The place is 150 years old, the roof looks suspect, in needs updated everything, it would cost $1000 a month to heat, and we can't stop talking about it!!  I wish that builders today didn't have to crank out these cookie cutter homes 6 at a time.  Where is Bob Villa when you need him??

I love old houses.  Compared to brand new houses, they not only have character but its almost as if they have "souls".

It is so heartbreaking to me than to see an old house abandoned and decrepit.

To me, people who rehab them are doing a service, not just for themselves but for everybody in the community.

Keep on rehabbing Kaye.  Obviously houses aren't human but to me its almost like saving a "life".

You are right Sharon, the housing is so much more interesting here than my previous home of  Phoenix.   By the way I used to work for a company in the RTP.  I love Cary!

I have a number of clients in this area who want to buy older homes with 'bones' and restore them. Good for you.I think people are tired of the same looking house in the same looking community with all the hoa's etc.
