Why does every real estate agent drive a mercedes benz?

Profile picture for mmcnicho
Why does every real estate agent in the bay area drive a mercedes benz?

Every open house I have been to there is a Mercedes parked in front.  When we have been early to an open house, and there was no Mercedes in front- it meant the agent was late.

I had three ideas why. First, maybe agents want to project success.  They want sellers to feel that they makes a lot because they sell very well.

Second, people tend to defer more to well dressed people because they project more of an authority figure.  Maybe the Mercedes is just an extension of the wardrobe and acts in the same way.

Third, real estate requires an average amount of intelligence, but a lot of chutzpah.  Maybe these are the same sort of people who didn't expect to make a lot of money earlier in life, and when they do- they tend to be more flashy about it.

Anyone notice the same thing? Other  theories?

Ha,ha, I love it!
Here in Tennessee, we are into the Lexas!
I am so sure, that no matter what profession was chosen , Real estate agent, Nurse, Lender, they happen to be just into nice cars, they dont have to be New, but just nice, This Real Estate stuff, beats you up so much, at least when you can't sell or make someone happy, you can get happy driving a nice car ! Recently, I "did a deal" with an agent that was leaving Real Estate and going into Medical Tech, so she bought a 2-seater convertible, and was loving it ! There are just car people out there !

LOL …

Sorry I drive a Nissan Titan LE (yup a little girl with a big truck complex)

Usually my past big trucks had been 4x4 but the height didn't always work well for people getting in and out.

An agent should drive a car that is clean and runs well. I prefer 4 doors

Most of my clients will see me in a business suit however many have seen me in overalls (usually as I'm helping them “improve” something) and the occasional “laid back” attire (usually when I am running to do something for them, during rare time off)

I cannot speak for other agents, and I'm not in the Bay Area, but I'm 6'3 and it's either a big German vehicle, or an SUV for me. And when I have tall clients in the car with me, the extra leg room makes a huge difference.

For me, I wanted a diesel vehicle because the engines tend to last much longer, and I drive my vehicles every day. All day. And when it comes to diesel engines that last a long time and get great fuel mileage, you can't go wrong with a Mercedes Benz.

And when you drive up to 45,000 miles per year, you figure you're going to be in the car for quite a while and it's good to be comfortable. So I still drive my Mercedes station wagon when I'm out putting up signs in peoples yards, and now I really enjoy my R320cdi 4matic when I'm showing properties to buyers.

Question is did they buy or rent (lease) them?
Ever wonder why so many MB and BMW flood the used
car lots like the ones on Stevens Creek ?
Many are off lease after a few years.
How many write the expense off as business expense?

Oh yeah, that reminds me.

The fourth theory is that since real estate agents are constantly in their cars, they splurge a bit in order to better enjoy their working hours.

I have to agree with Nathan.  Its about comfort for the client.  I sell large acreage and that involves off-road tours of property on not so kind roads.  No matter the conditions you want the client to be comfortable.

I drive a 2008 Toyota Tundra (not good on gas, but makes up with room for clients and good for off-road).

Funny story, we bought and sold a home in Los Angeles, bought in early 2004 and sold early 2005.

The Agent who represented us on both sides... in 2004 she drove an old Honda Accord (or something similar, very beat up).  The next year when we called to sell she pulled up in a brand new BMW 7 series.

I have to say, like it or not it made me confident that she could move my house (although in 2005 it was pretty easy to move homes in L.A.).

I have the cash to buy plenty of mercedes, I just don't care. My honda is comfortable as hell, I drive it it LA/ Vegas all the time, and get 42 mph on the interstate. I'm over six foot, it has room to spare.

My nissan truck I picked up for 1500, and spent another 1000 fixing it up. now it runs like a champ but it is beat up. I picked up rock in it several times, refridgerators, washer, dryers, dishwashers, pool filters, boards, the list never ends.

I'm going to buy 10 or so rentals, so I will always need a work vehicle. If you judge your agents by their cars, I can name a dozen agents who have been foreclosed on their own homes, that still drive nice cars...

Az,
I agree with the last part about many agents with nice cars who can't sell or don't know the second thing about RE.

Although for some Agent's I think its a must.  Its an expectation of their clientele.  Obviously leasing an expensive vehicle is something that any joe/jane can do, but for some Agent's its just as important a tool.

It would be pretty bad if I showed up at a $1.7million listing in my old Toyota van that got great gas mileage but was backed into by a semi.

And my BMW had no leg room in the back seat when I had to put the seat back so far or it was impossible to drive. And my signs didn't fit in the trunk. And it rains and gets muddy here-- and that's not good for the interior. And with the dogs, some sort of bigger car made sense, and the Mercedes station wagon gets upwards of 30-miles per gallon and it's 10 years old now and has WAAAAY more than the average mileage. But there comes a point when you don't want your car leaking oil in a new client's driveway.

I don't drive a Mercedes either.  I drive a Jeep.  I need a 4 wheel drive car in order to make it through Chicago's winters :)

I have a lancer paid in full...but I did go for leather seats so I can windex any client spills. Although not quite as roomy as an SUV, the car turns on a dime and parallel parks like a dream, so it is great for urban showings.

Around here, it tends to be Lexus' and Acura, though I have seen a few Jaguars.

It used to be Cadalac's and Buick Park Avenues.

I'm actually surprised I don't see more Chrysler Towne&Country's.  The rear space for signs is excelent, and very accessable with the key fob that opens the rear and two side slider doors independently.  The leather seats are comfortable for the clients (unless they wear leather jackets in the rain; nothing is worse than wet leather on leather).  And one can adjust the seating for up to 7 for those large familes and/or inlaws.  When more space is needed for materials or signs, the seats just drop into the floor; no need to pull them out to store.

Besides, with a truck, you cannot lock 10 ft pipes and 4 x 8 sheets of plywood and sheet-rock into the vehicle, but with a mini-van, they fit in exceptionally easily; and with a Towne&Country, no pulling the seats.  The floor is also level enough that it is not too hard to get an electric wheel chair in either the back or the side doors, for your parapalegic clients so that you can show them the "accessible" listings.

The "auto-levelers" also helps when you need to load up with concrete block or landscaping materials to get the property "curb appeal" ready.

It is even big enough for most "staging" furniture you may need to bring in.

"Why does every real estate agent in the bay area drive a mercedes benz?"

It is usually some kind of upscale vehicle.

Every little bit helps when you're trying to lend an air of legitimacy to what is essentially nothing more then a sales pitch by a salesperson on commission.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but when I talk to a real estate agent, and they're driving a car worth five (or more) times what mine is, that just makes me think I'd be overpaying them if I were to buy from them.
For high-end clients? Sure, I understand. For people making 40k a year? You probably shouldn't drive a car worth more than they make in 18 months.

I don't believe Nathan drives his vehicles "all day", "every day".  If he did, how is he typing on the internet?  Does he have voice recognition software, text-to-speach screen reader, and wireless internet so that he can actively use the internet while driving?

I think it's about comfort for the clients, projecting a successful image and the ability to fit more than 3 folks in the car. I once rode with a realtor that has an escort. Her other car was in the shop. I offered to drive, but she said no thanks. I ended up sitting on a wallpaper book and with old papers at my feet. Not the best ride ever or the best agent. My more recent agents have had well appointed Accords, mid level Acuras or Camrys. I appreciate smarts and professional dependability as a client more than a fancy realtor ride, but some folks like the flash. At the core of the real estate business is sales. Image sells.

I drive a 2008 Toyota Corrolla, works fine and has plenty of room for my clients.  Great gas mileage too!  I wish I could have been able to afford the Prius, but budge said no.

Are there REAs dumb enough to lease a vehicle considering the amount of driving they do and the miles they put on the vehicl...up, my friend is one and leases the Lexus......talk about a spanking when you turn that puppy in, esp if you can't buy it at the end.
