This is my favorite reason:

Rent:

"Your children play in a parking lot."

They should have added, "Your children goes to a crappy school and ends up working in McDonald at head fryer because you rented."

oops, that should have said "at McDonald as head fryer..."

But what did you expect??? My dad was a renter and I ended up dropping out in the 6th grade.

Rent: your daughter gets tatooed, funny piercings, smokes pot and gets knocked up by the local gang bangers.

Own: your daughter drinks wine, joins a sorority, and gets knocked up by the harvard grad who is home visiting, gets married and lives a great life.

One does not "own" the house until the last mortgage payment is made....the lender does.  And, after the last payment is made and you now "own" the house, stop paying the property taxes and see what happens.  The state will "own" the house in short order.  The latter also being true if one pays cash for the house.

Still, some of the reasons given here are valid relatively speaking.  More space and a back yard for a dog are some of my considerations.

lmfao!  Some of my favorites (adapted from distant memories of a catholic youth):

  • Every time you pay your rent baby jesus cries.
  • Remember when you pay your rent all your dead relatives are watching.
  • It is always better to own your home and suffer than to rent your home in sin.
  • We are all born renters, and only are forgiven once we choose to own.
  • Our savior suffered foreclosure so that we might escape a damnation of eternal renting.
  • The NAR is infallible.
  • To tide less than 40% of your income to your mortgage will not get you into paradise.

This is pretty funny!

My biggest reason to own is that I hate the temporary, always waiting, feeling of renting.  Renting might be smart for me right now but I know I wouldn't even unpack.  Because it's just temporary.  In 12 short months, I would have to pack it all again.

Ditto, la457.  I haven't seen my china, crystal or salad tongs in over a year - not that they are needed/used more than 1x per year anyway.  8)

I think that when I eventually do unpack them I will start using them every day.  Especially the wine glasses and champagne flutes.

Each mortgage payment could go toward building a nest egg for your family.

It could, it you weren't throwing it away on interest...

I really must say, anyone dumb enough to buy into that ad either would already be in foreclosure, or probably wouldn't qualify for a mortgage these days.

Renting is great in that you do eventually unpack.  But not until you've left crap in boxes for 12, 24, 36 months, always thinking you'll be moving soon.  But, then you open them up, realize you don't need 90% of that crap, and donate/recycle/dispose.

We've gotten rid of perhaps up to 40% of our crap, and we just started a new stack in the garage this weekend.  It's purifying.  When you have a house for 10+ years you end up keeping so much stuff you just simply don't need.  Ever.

When we do buy a house again we'll be moving in clean, like starting a new life.  No baggage in the closet, as it were.

Yes, I park both cars in the garage, which most home-owners do not do!

And I used to have people over.  But owning with no mortgage has not helped me get married!

Pasadenan, more important than the house, you are intelligent.  You must be hiding from the very individuals you would like to attract.  You will have to leave the house to get a date.  Most likely.

Strange, I rent.  I must be using someone else's 3-car garage.  My dogs must be running across some else's flagstone paved backayard that looks out over the 10th fairway.  I hope the cops don't arrest me for stealing the veggies out of someone else's garden as well.

Problem is this.  We can all pounce on this and poke fun.  These jackles are using the 2% rule, the same thing that applies to the email scams.  98% of the people will ignore this email.  2% will not and there is the sucker market they are looking for.  This is akin to selling "Spanish Treasure ship recovery futures" to old people.  It just aint right.

Alpine's Reasons to Own Instead of Rent

1. If you rent instead of own, you will not go to Heaven, but will instead spend all of eternity in Hell.

2. When you rent, the terrorists win!

3. Renting is unpatriotic

la457 nailed it.

I despise renting.  I dont make enough in N NJ to own.  The crapshack I rent has been sold for teardown next year.  I get to move next year again.  I didnt move in 2008  wooohooo!

We need to move some of 3girls $2100 a month bargains to N NJ.  That gets you a small cape 38 miles out in N NJ.

$2k a month in Bergen County gets you a POS 3 bedroom/ 1 bathroom cape cod, most of which don't have AC.  A house comparable to the one 3girls has starts at $3,500 and can easily go all the way to $4,300 a month in the upper crust towns.

Well that splits this discussion off into 2 parts.

Poor choices when relocating.

Good choices when relocating.

You can pay that type of idiotic rent here in Phoenix in the Scottsdale area.  Some people are just too stupid to have money, so we try and keep them in one or two "exclusive" areas.  :-D

Any Realtor have one of these brochure?

http://www.realtor.org/prodser.nsf/products/186-90?opendocument

Revised for 2007!
Are your clients still on the fence about buying a home? Then tell them what they need to know! Homeownership is easier and less expensive than renting. NAR's Research Division developed this informative brochure to explain the benefits of homeownership as compared to renting making this brochure a great tool for marketing first time buyers. Mortgage interest deductions, mortgage principal accumulation, property tax deductions, and home appreciation are depicted in an easy to interpret format that strongly supports the decision to buy a home as opposed to renting. This brochure also includes a slot for your business card so you can personalize it.

Brochure also available in Spanish:
Sold in packs of 100 brochures.

To Valhakar...

You are parking in someone else's 3 car garage.  Your dog does run across someone else's flagstone paved backyard.  The veggies are yours, BUT...the land and home is someone else's...Your landlord!  Who is running all the way to the bank.

But not everyone is meant to be a home owner.

''Your landlord! Who is running all the way to the bank.'

In some cases the landlords are running from the banks since

their homes have taken such a dump walking is the best alternative.

'But not everyone is meant to be a home owner.'
