Stainless steel is steel/alloy with chromium added, it is magnetic. Adding nickle to it increases hardness and durability but renders it non magnetic.
Most refridgeraters front skins are the latter for durability. The sides are usually steel or basic stainless sans the nickle.
Usually knives labled stainless are of basic stainless steel so they can still be easily sharpened and are magnetic..they stick to your wall mounted magnet holders.
Flatware, knives forks and spoons contain nickle for added durability and that new look, they are usually non magnetic.
There are numorous grades of stainless steel with various addatives for different applications so consider this the short answer.

Supercub is such a smarty just like mcwoolf. You learn something new everyday. I'm using it at the next boring dinner party.

Same thing happened to me, and then I thought to myself, why would I want to have fridge magnets on a stainless appliance anyway :)   They're a big home staging no no!

Wow, what an answer. Thanks. I wish I could hang my kids art on my fridge. I use tape instead of magnets.

because of the fact it is stainless steel, and thus other alloys such as chromium have been embedded into it to make it shiny etc. but eliminating its magnetic properties.  But they sure do look nice............

does it have a coating around it, are you sure it is stainless steal and not just silver in colour?  also your magnet might not be strong enough
