Honestly, in this current economy, I am stocking up on Bright Red Pleather Sofas. They have a much higher rate of return than local Real Estate. I store them all in a EX-storage facilty down the street.

Have you notice the "going out of business" signs on these establishments?
Maybe getting grandma's floral sofa is not so bad after all!

My sofas all have thick see-through plastic coverings...you can never be too careful these days (ie., the "Poppy" episode on "Seinfeld")

I've been riding the subway since I was 3.
And you know Mark, if you are THAT obsessed with my house, there is counseling that is available. I have 7 doctors in my family. I can hook you up.

With degrees from online "universities" I suppose. That explains their success treating your multiple personalities. Thanks but no thanks, Alps.
How's the bidding war coming along?

I think the we as Americans should help turn the economy around with each household committing to buy one full size red pleather sofa. Buying yourself out of a recession is the American way. Pleather in 2012

Oh and I think if the government is really committed to rescuing the economy that they should subsidize the pleather sofa purchase. I await my pleather stimulus check.

Alpine's brother is a physician out on Long Island. Alps is the black sheep, the govvie clerk with the mail-order degree and mail-order bride.

I don''t have a brother for the 55th time. But I do have a cousin who is married to a heart surgeon who makes more money in 1 year than all you silly doomers make combined.

LOL, sunnyview, but my cc's are maxed out!
On a more serious note, I have a friend who started a furniture business during the bubble. He is teterring(sp?) on going out of business. His wife is due in December, and he sold and bought in the height of the bubble. He has lost the $200k downpayment. The value of his house went from $500k to $325k, and still dropping. Triple whammie. At least the have health insurance from the wife. I don't know if he can pay off his creditors, otherwise a BK might be in the not so distant future. Then there is this financial meltdown to hasten the downward spiral...
Knock on wood...

"The value of his house went from $500k to $325k, and still dropping."
Ouch. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's struggles. Tell him to hang in there. It could be worse: I know of a guy who threw his life's savings into a relatively low-income town at the absolute peak of the bubble for 840K, and now he cannot even sell his house for 700K (he's been trying to sell for two years), and it's still dropping! Even worse, it appears to be negatively impacting the owner's sanity. Such a shame. Your friend can be thankful he has his family and apparently hasn't lost his mind yet.

I am not privy to his finances. I hope he did not take out the equity to fund the biz or to buy stocks! Losing the downpayment but only have to make payment on a $300k loan on a $325k home is different than making payment on a $500k loan on the same house.
What a tangled web we weave...

Best. Thread. Ever.

Will homebuyers continue to purchase red pleather sofas?
For those buyers out there who are brave enough to be buying houses in this market, are you trimming back on your pleather purchases in light of the recent market turmoil?
What impact do you all think this will have on pleather purveyors across the nation?
