My County is taxing me for $460,000 house, and I have to pay for it, Zillow is saying the house is worth $383,000, who should I sue...
I also agree with Sunnyview, contact your local assessor to find out how to appeal your taxes. Note there are strict time limits WHEN you can appeal, so find out right away. Good luck!

I agree with Sunny, looking at the map for recent sales similar to your property, you need to appeal your tax assessment.

Unfortunately it is probably less painful to bang your head against the wall of your home than. It just seems amazing that Zillow can peddle this garbage and then plead the First Amendment the way they do. It's basically poking fun at all fair minded people in their hurry to make a quick buck. My advise is not to give up but persevere in making your complaint by any means you can until you get justice.

I would probably skip suing both and instead would call an agent in your area to see what they think your house is worth right now. Agents can give you a CMA and you can go from there. Also, since it is the beginning of the year, I would also contact the Durham County tax office and ask about the process to appeal to make sure you do not miss the deadline.
Zillow values and tax assessments may both be wrong. Zillow cannot see your house. The assessor wants to keep the tax base stable. Neither should be relied on to put a value on your house. A local agent can often tell you if you have the comps you need to appeal and you can't save money any faster than reducing your recurring taxes.

I have sympathy with your situation and fully agree with your complaint. It is outrageous that a company can plant erroneous and unwanted valuations on peoples homes the way Zillow does purely for commercial reasons without any responsibility or accountability for the consequences, purely for the purpose of attracting advertising revenues. The fact that the homeowner is denied any right of appeal by Zillow is a travesty, and it's time our legislators caught up with the technology and introduced some form of Regulation over AVM sites like Zillow to stop this nonsense. No wonder home prices are in a race to the bottom when such irresponsible valuations are published using a flawed algorithm that has never been publicly tested and the source data that Zillow uses is riddled with errors. What fair minded society would approve this stuff?

Contact an appraiser here for a better - and more expensive - value. Zestimates are free and are intended to give you an 'idea' of what your home may be worth if you were to sell it.

I don't like the Zillow Zestimate; as far as I am concern, they just throw ## and lot of regular buyers see them and believe they are correct!!!!!
A house that is nicer and has 1000 sqf more than it's neighbor can not be less Zestimated; it's just Wrong
Zillow has big responsibilies, it can not just feed the public wrong information, it's very missleading, they cause problems...

why to realtors use guesstimate when an estimation is by definition a quick approximation based on relevant data?

Zestimates are not appraisals. They rely heavily on public records information like past sales price/assessed value and trends in local sales. There are a lot of things that Zillow cannot see like condition, the quality of your house, views, how nice the houses on your street are etc. There is more in the Zestimate here.
The best thing that you can do as an owner is to make sure your home facts are correct and up to date. You also need to look at your public records listed like past saels price and make sure it is correct. Both of those things can help make your Zestimate more accurate within it's obvious constraints. If you want an idea of what your house might be worth, you best bet is calling a local agent for a value estimate. Most are happy to help.

No worries on this, if you were actually going to sell it, a professional Realtor would not use a 'zestimate' which is like a guesstimate of value. We would use our Multiple Listing Service and view the interior of your home as well as look at what had recently sold in your community. Zillow is a zestimate...thats all.
I know your area well, I would suggest you go in, claim the home and update the features. If you want to know what your home is currently worth, feel free to contact me (click on my name) or any other local realtor there is a drop down menu here on Zillow to find us,under Professionals. We can do a comparative market analysis for you or you could pay an appaiser to come out and do one .
Hope that helps.
