Zestimate values hacked, look at Zestimate chart!

My home at 440 66th St, Oakland, CA  94609 was purchased in June 2007 for $875k and the Zestimate value, after the algorythm change, rose in the next year to $5million!  This is wholly incorrect and the fluxuations now (My Zestimate @ $586k) do not show up due to this hack job!  Can you correct this?

Zillow did write software to delete some of those peaks from incorrectly applied "recently sold"; but they still didn't get them all...  they don't have a means of re-calculating for those months since the models get destroyed during the next iteration, and they have to rent lots of cloud space when they do major recalculations from major algorithm changes.

So, I just "fixed" it for you...  (not on the website, only on these posted images), by manually deleting the spikes and calculating shifted running averages...

Thanks for posting.....

This is fun to watch --- glad this is being corrected.  Guess I should check out mine, too to see if values shot up by millions. Then maybe I can say that for a brief moment, I was a millionaire :)

Thank goodness for Pasa's lovely graphs. Just in time too, I was close to going through graph withdrawal. ;)

You are welcome!

(There is a little know "secret" that the data for the charts can be downloaded, using the web address:
http://www.zillow.com/ajax/homedetail/HomeValueChartData.htm?mt=1&zpid=#&format=json

where the "#" is replaced with the Zillow Property Identification Number (ZPID) as used in the home details page URL as well as posted on the home details page.

The format has to be revised some before it can be imported into Excel, and the dates are in modified Unix time (in this case, milliseconds from beginning of 1970).  So in Excel, I convert the date by /1000/3600/24 and then add 1/1/1970  5:00:01 PM)

Once Excel is set up for one chart; it is no big deal to swap out newly downloaded info from another ZPID number.

Thank you all for your help (especially Pasadenan for the graphs!).

@ Vince Curtis, thank you for your advice, but I use Zillow as a trending tool and not absolute VALUE.  I could not see the trend due to the multi million dollar increased valuation and scale errors that 'wetdawgs' describes.

When Zillow rolled out their new algorithm in June 2011, there were several Zestimate historical crazies such as the one you've described.  It appears that they've fixed some, but there still are many remaining in the East Bay (Oakland through Milpitas).   It is frustrating as the graph scale is scaled to show the several million peak and one can't see the current variations (i've filed a similar complaint).

Surprise ! Zestimates arent REAL values, they are only guesses. Dont take them as VALUES, only what a computer think it may be. Values dont rise and fall in one day though errors in algorithims do.

If you want a real value, contact a Realtor or appraiser in the area. OR utilized the Zillow Home index, which is an aggregate of hundreds of values into consideration for your home.

You will ONLY find out how much your home is worth if and when you sell it, everything else is only 'zoodoo' ...

PS - Corrections are made all of the time for errors, check back sometime in the future regarding the error...
