Zillow Estimate Dramatic Drop

Profile picture for tls100309
Hello,

I'm writing to you because within the last week my Zestimate has dropped almost $50,000.  I'm wondering if there is a bug in your software?  Also, the numbers it is displaying for previous zestimates does not match what they were in the past. Last week the value was at $196,000 and today it is at $149,000.  I know I may be biased because I own the home, but the $149,000 zestimate is really not fair for this property.  How often do you reevaluate the estimates of these homes?  I've updated my profile because the house has been completely rehabilitated and our zestimate has gone down since I made these updates.  To me and any normal logical person this would not make sense.  Any insight you can provide would be helpful.

Thank you,

Tammy Steele

There may have been some sales in your area that are either foreclosures or damaged property - like if there has been a fire in a house and it's sold cheaply to a contractor.  This brings the numbers down for everyone's property.

I don't know if they take info from your profile and use that in the valuation of your house.

Thanks Sharon.  My house was appraised in April of 2010 at $230,000.  My husband and I have put $30,000 worth of work into it and now the Zestimate is at $149,000.  There is seriously something wrong with that!  I understand that the market fluctuates but give me a break!

wetdawgs-thanks for the link.  I see I'm not the only one who thinks this new "algorithm" is ridiculous!

I used to rely on Zillow as a starting point.  They have lost all credibility to me!

Zillow updated their algorithm for calculation of Zestimates on June 13.  You can read more here.

Frustrating but Zillow is not where you should go when trying to figure out how much your home is worth. Hire an appraiser or talk with a local realtor.
Here is a link to Zillow's 'zestimate. I think you will find it very helpful
