Zillow Forums can be a bit like "Trial by Fire"...

Zillow Forums can be a bit brutal for anyone expecting to post and immediately get a "Nice post, good to see you" and pat-on-the-back.

Just some thoughts from a consumer perspective...

If you are going to post statistics as a launching point (or backup) to any position you are trying to advance, post a link to the source of the statistic. Even better, post a link to the raw data that the stat was derived from. Just be aware that Zillow doesn't allow posting a lnk to your own website (self-promotional).

Right-or-wrong, repeating NAR talking points or referencing NAR statistics is like wearing a meat-suit into the African plains. You're going to get mauled, it's just a matter of when and how bad. If you really need to go there, provide some form of impartial third-party support as well. And no, the state-specific association of realtors is not an impartial third party.

Be careful to differentiate between people taking shots at your argument/support and people taking shots at you personally. Review the first category to see if there is any merit to the counter-argument, and try to ignore the second category. Some of us exhibit less tact than we should, try not to drop to our level when that happens.

It's tempting, but avoid the doctor/attorney/??? comparisons. The analogy is weak at best. Accept that you really are in a professional sales position, and objectively promote/defend your value. And, realize that - however great you may be - your value varies from consumer-to-consumer based on their needs and perceptions...and no amount of "educating" is going to change that.

It seems counter-intuitive, but "presenting a united front" doesn't improve your image. I'm much more impressed when a REA will call out another on some BS post, Granted, the manner of the "calling out" needs some thought. In those instances, where your profession's image takes a hit is when other REAs jump on board to support an obviously incorrect statement - or rip into the REA for calling out the BS "in public".

one last...

If you are on these forums, you presumably are here to generate some level of visibility for yourself with the consumer community. Do yourself a favor and use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Not all exposure is good exposure (though some may differ).

We think carrying liver treats into the dog park and expecting only your own dog to notice is a better analogy.

borrowing SoCal's soapbox for a minute -

As I said on a previous thread, being a "responsible" real estate website contirbutor does take a bit of practice, and there is a learning curve of sorts.
When I first started posting  on another site 2 years ago, I thought it was acceptable to say "Call me for help" at the end of my post (apparently there are others who still think is' ok to do that - but that debate can be discussed another time! hah)......however,  in time I learned to take a step back, and try to see it from the consumer's perspective (why does that word now have a negative connotation to me? wonder why!).....anyway.........I now stop and try to really break down the various slogans and talking points before ever repeating them. This doesnt mean you have to always be politically correct or tell people what you think they want to hear. It just means making sure you are telling them what YOU believe...not what some article TOLD you to believe.

Ok that's it - I am returning the soapbox to Socal, or lending it, with his permission,  to anyone else who wants to step up!

Some last parting words of wisdom:
I Agree with Michael - it's a great time to buy (well, buy something - maybe just not a house!) , and always use an agent (some kind of agent, anyway - insurance agent , travel agent, etc!) , or you'll lose tons of money ( I read that somewhere, so it must be true) **

** in case you don't know it, I am kidding

You should send your first reply to that Consumer department manager and have every new user read it before registering.

Hi Sunny,

nice photo, and nice deal. 33 cents per quarter lb. I guess deflation is alive and well ;)
