Zillow needs price charts that go back further than 10 years.

I highly recommend the housing price graphs be updated to go back at least 40 years.  10 years is simply too short a period for owners to understand long term trends both nationally and locally.  Without this data, Zillow will remain somewhat amateurish.

Well, though I don't consider it "ammiturish", except in the extra detail that most "professionals" skip...

I do think it is a good idea to extend the trends back further; but in many cases the electronic county records would be even harder to get back further than 10 years, as well as the large expense to pay data collectors to gather and format it.

Hi lcdrphd.  Forty years would be fantastic but data prior to the mid-90s gets a lot harder to obtain and is available in a lot fewer places (for the reasons that Pasadenan notes).  OFHEO/FHFA has some state/MSA data going back to the mid-70s but it is only for conforming mortgages which can make it unrepresentative in some areas (check out the differences between OFHEO/FHFA data and either Zillow or Case-Shiller in the past five years if you want to see the difference it makes).  Case-Shiller has public data for 14 MSAs going back to 1987 but you can't publicly get any lower level data.

We do have data in a lot of places going back to 1996 but our longest charting history is currently 10 years.  We'll add a feature request to have a longer charting history if we have the data, but I can't tell you now when our engineering team will be able to add it.

Sorry if our current time series is inadequate for your purposes as we feel that our combination of geographic coverage, temporal granularity (monthly, not quarterly) and geographic granularity (down to the ZIP Code level) is unmatched currently.  Let us know if there's another source that you use that has more data and we'll figure out where they're getting it and how to do so also.

Thanks.

Lcdrphd: With all due respect, did you pay for the data? You can receive in-dept documentation from experts for a fee. Regards,

Will we see this update before 2012 is over? I would like data going back to about 1997. 15 years is all I ask for. 12 years (the 10 from the date of this post and the 2 since then) would be an improvement. I would like more but your data going to 1996 is close enough. That shows what happened before the bubble started. Being able to see pre-bubble data is greatly desired.

Is there an update on what happened to the request? Do you really need more than 2 years to accomplish this?
