This is a fun question! I have no idea about the San Fran area but in New England we had just dug ourselves out of the savings and loan problems and things were really ramping up. The average home today is selling at aprox. 25% less than it was at it's highest value in 05.  So the value of this home would have been about 840,000 in 05. Then from 96-05 we experienced about a 8-9% appreciation rate on average per year. So in the Northeast I would say that home would have sold for about $275,000 -$325,000. This is only a fun guess. If you need to be more accurate your city tax records should show you your assesment at that time.

Good question, Zillow only goes back ten years. Dated sales data is available from appraisers, you can look for one here...
