Hi Lynn,

Paying off an old collection account "could" have a negative impact to your score. The reason is it may be taking a collection last reported 2 years ago which they will update it as paid at the current date. This will change the last reported date.

Negotiate. Let the creditor know you will pay IF they will remove from your credit report. Get it in writing before you make the payment. If it is not removed after payment then you can use your letter received and proof of payment to have it removed through the credit bureaus directly.

If it has been paid already the scores "should" increase over time as the negative item ages each month. After a negative event and item happen it is crucial to make sure all payments are made on time.

Were there other items on the credit report that could be reviewed for opportunities to increase the score?

Depending on how old the bill was, your score might not necessarily improve.
I would suggest follow up with the creditor. Get a letter from them stating the account is now $0.00 and make sure the letter reference their co name/address and the account number.
