Residential property does not require landlord to supply fire extinguisher(s),BUT THE TEXAS PROPERTY CODE requires landlords, if they
do supply fire extinguisher(s) to check them regularly.

Search for texas property code information on the internet and do
some homework before
you even think of renting out a place that you own!!!  there are
many requirements of landlords

Here is the TX Tenants Handbook and on pg 17 it discusses fire extinguishers. Also, you can check out the TX AG's office website here for more information. There may be other codes if you are in the Austin city limits, so you may want to do a google search for that as well. However, local code will not usually supersede state code.
Please do your own due diligence, read the information found on these links, and disregard any comments that say you don't need them unless they are from an attorney licensed in TX and practicing in Austin.

There is no general requirement I know of for fire extinguishers in a residential property.
