You can check the tax assessor's card on-line to determine if there are any liens on the property and if his tax payments are up-to-date.

If you want to check on your own, you can go to the town hall.  Tax Office can tell you if taxes are current and the Clerks office can tell you if there is a Lis Pens / Foreclosure pending.  Either way it does not mean these will not be paid off when you close.  After you have a signed contract your attorney should do a title search prior to closing and any liens should be paid off from the sellers net proceeds.

Before you buy a home your attorney will run a title search and suggest you have title insurance which protects you in the future from the previous owners debts that may be attached to the property. Never do anything without an attorney
