The best thing to do for you would be use an online service, service magic, home advisor, ect.  You should be able to find one local to your area.  Read the reviews, and by all means Don't, Don't just pick a company because you see their name go across the bottom of the screen all the time, while watching the news.  We have fixed many roofs, among other repairs behind the biggest guys in the business, do to the fact they do not have the time to give you job the attention it should receive.  Make sure the guy giving you the estimate will be the guy on the job and not a salesman.  If a salesman comes out, that is a sure way to know you are going to pay to much.
Good Luck,
Rick

There are  many factors that come into play when figuring such an estimate.

How the house is located; is it easy to get to...will it require a lot of carrying or walking.
.
Hand nail vs. air nail; hand nail takes longer but stays on better because the carpenter can feel when the nail is set at its best holding power.
Air nail are shot in and unless the air is regulated according to temp. they will shoot through the surface of a hot shingle.

Strip the roof or not ; that is an option in a lot of places with 1 layer; if you
do not strip the existing layer, less labor, less disposal.

The type of shingle; standard shingle vs. architectural; 20yr. - 35+yr and the architectural looks better (if you can see them).

Company overhead; All contractors price differently because some have more overhead for different reasons.

Bottom line is you get what you pay for and this is one place you don't want
to be cheap on prices.
It is the first place buyers, appraisers, home inspectors and the like check as they walk up to your property plus it is the cover to your investment.

IMPORTANT:
License and insurance is a must. Get yourself 3 estimates from local contractors anddo your homework and choose the best company for the job... not always the cheapest .

the house is in south shore mass.  That is what I'm doing asking the question on here.  I just want an estimate so when I get some roofers coming to the house I will know if they are not over charging me.

You should contact a roofer in your area to provide you with an estimate.
