In the past, your pay history on other items (not showing on your credit report) would help, but most lenders are going to want SOME type of tradeline (account) on your credit.  If you have no credit, you may be able to get a 'secured' credit card to build credit.

No. You do not need a credit card. Do not go get one just fluff up your score. However you will need to prove you pay your bills. A good lender can use your current utility, car insurance, cell phone, etc to document your pay history if you don't have a credit file. Feel free to contact me for a referral to some good lenders that can help.
