I'm not sure what you mean by Aluminum primer. Your banisters have a clear coat of polyurethane on them. The easiest way to paint them white would be to:

1) Not sand them! This will open up oils in the polurethane that will complicate the top coat.
2) Prime them with a Multi-purpose latex primer.
3) Paint them with a Semi-Gloss or Gloss White Latex Paint.
