does it make sense to move my kitchen washer/dryer to a basement laundry room?

I am renovating my kitchen and currently have my washer and dryer in a laundry closet. I will be able to increase the floor space in my kitchen, and add a 6 foot by 24 inch island if I move the laundry facilities into a laundry room that will be built n the basement. My home currently has the garage in the basement, as well as 2 sides fully above ground. I would make a full room for the laundry, about 12 feet by 12 feet, with a floor, ceiling and drywall walls.

Well, I would most definitely move the laundry room downstairs, as long as the basement is finished and it does not look dark and dingy. Since you had these appliances in a closet, I am wondering how  the floor plan will work once the walls are removed, I am assuming, you will rearrange the whole kitchen.  A large kitchen with an island is a nice asset to your house and most people would prefer to do the laundry elsewhere.

I personally don't like the washer and dryer in the kitchen and would prefer it in the basement, even though it is less convenient.  I watch a lot of HGTV and from what I've seen many people these days don't like the washer and dryer in the kitchen.  If it was a small room off the kitchen, that might be fine.  You mentioned yours was in a closet, so if it's hidden it might be alright.  I'd get opinions from your friends and family who are familiar with your home.

My recommendation is to move the laundry into the basement. The extra space in your kitchen, with increase the value of your home. I would also suggest installing a laundry chute so you are able to drop clothes down from upstairs easily. Depends on how creative you are looking to be, we also offer dumbwaiters, for bringing the clothes and other items from the basement up and down. We are based out off Litchfield/Kent Area, if you need any assistance on any aspect of this project. Are you making these changes for you or for potential resale?

I'd vote for a bigger more convenient kitchen and laundry in a light, bright basement room.

It really depends. I personally don't like laundry in the kitchen. Many older houses have it set up that way, but modern buyers often perceive it as funky and not a good set up. Basement laundry is very common, but not as convenient as a first floor laundry. I would choose basement laundry over kitchen laundry especially if it makes your kitchen more attractive. Buyers will generally choose kitchen over laundry room.

I would suggest that you plan for a first floor to basement laundry chute if possible. You will still have to bring laundry upstairs, but the chute will put it right where it needs to go at least on the way down. Chutes can be made to fit in the back of closets, the cut out bottom of bathroom cabinets or in a small upstairs hallway cabinet door. They add little expense, but lots of convenience. Kids love them and it saves bringing most laundry (short of fluffy bedding) downstairs.

If your kitchen is small and you want that extra space, then it's fine to put your laundry room where ever you want.

As someone who has had a laundry room in the basement, and then in a room beside the kitchen, I can tell you that I would never have my laundry room back in the basement again!  That's only my opinion though, and I have a large kitchen so I can't make that judgment call for you.

The cons of putting it in the basement means walking up and down steps repeatedly all day into a darker, more musty atmosphere, whereas having it near the kitchen means you can wash, dry and fold and still watch the tv, or cook dinner, or keep an eye on the kids, etc.  I'm absolutely thrilled to have my laundry room right outside the kitchen because it also serves as a mud room that the kids and husband use to come through to get into the house, instead of using the front door and tracking dirt and mud through the house.

On the other hand, there are millions of people who put their laundry room in the basement because if the washer floods the floor it won't ruin anything other than a few towels to mop it up with, and many people simply don't like having their laundry close where visitors can see it.

If you need that space, and don't care about working in the basement for a couple of hours a day (or every few days; however you wash your clothes) then go for it.

It's always nice to have laundry upstairs, but it does take a lot of room.  The basement requires more walking with laundry baskets, but it's out of the way.  So it's really up to you and how you feel about it.

Makes sense too me.  Most kitchens I see with laundry/dryer in them are 'compact' set-ups like Condos.
