Hi Charlie,
There are different ways of protesting taxes here in Texas.

  -- Value unequal to others
  -- Value over market

When looking at "Unequal to Others", you can usually get the values of surrounding homes from your County Appraisal District.  Try to google "CAD" plus the name of your county.  Compare other homes in the immediate vicinity.

Value Over Market.  Ask a Broker to give you some comparable homes.  You may even offer to pay them for a Broker Price Opinion.  You'll need this information when protesting to the board for your valuation.

MAKE SURE, when you have an appointment with the District, that you keep it.  DO NOT miss the appointment.

Usually you will have an informal hearing.  Here you will actually meet with one of the county appraisers, and they will ask you why you think you're home is over valued, etc.  They should be able to show you the homes they used to determine your valuation.  These will be sales from the PRIOR Calendar Year, and SHOULD be in your immediate vicinity, similar size, age and characteristics of your property.

If you don't want to g o it alone, you can a property tax consulting firm.

These guys usually charge a small upfront fee, plus a percentage of whatever they save you.  I've done this type of work before, and most of the time, a significant savings was realized.  I don't do it any more, just for past  real estate clients.
