i understand i can list my properties for sale for nothing - how do i go about doing this - i tried yesterday and then it said i had to pay.

Manually entering listings does require payment.

You will need to get your listings on a datafeed such as postlets or listhub.   You can read more about data feeds in the Zillow FAQs
