"Contact your local real estate agent" isn't the answer to every question on this site.

I'm sorry to some of the posters in this thread, but no matter what any other agents may say, the actual best way to find out what your home is worth is by ordering an appraisal. They're a:
1) Disinterested 3rd party that is:
2) Trained
3) Licensed
&
4) Certified
to value your property, none of which an agent actually is.

Honestly, the best way to figure value is to have a local real estate agent that has experience in your area to give you a comparative market analysis.  All these websites just use a per square footage average for all homes that have sold in the area.  They don't take into consideration any improvesment made, lot size or location in the neighborhood, floorplan, etc.  There are a lot more factors that usually determine value than just square footage.

A zestimate is a good start if you are just curious.  If you are thinking of putting it on the market or acting on the worth, contact an agent to do a CMA. But even then, it's only worth what someone else is willing to pay and if they are getting a loan, what a lender is willing to loan on it based upon the appraisal from their approved list of appraisers.  The CMA is best used for determining what your house will MOSTLY likely sell for so if you are looking to sell, that's they way to start.

If you are getting a loan or a re-fi- it's only worth what the bank's approved appraiser says it is worth.  So even if you run out and pay an appraiser on  your own before listing or refinancing...the appraisal that is going to matter will be the one that a lender orders with someone from their approved list.

Hi Kathy & Mike:
The best way to find out what your property is worth in today's everchanging real estate market is to contact a local Realtor that knows the area.  You should be open to letting him/her view your property first and then have another meeting to get the correct price.
That would give you the most accurate estimate.
Hope this helps,

Zillow does not do appraisals, but you can get a Zestimate here. On this site you can go to the front page type your address in the box next to the"Find Homes" box and hit the blue GO button.

You should see a map and Zestimate value come up if Zillow has one available. There is lots of information available for your neighborhood there too. You can also contact a local agent or get an appraisal for a more detailed and current value. Hope it helps.

Hi Kathy & Mike,
The best way to find out what your home is worth is to contact a real estate agent. It's always best to interview a few agents to understand what your home may be worth.

The real estate agent will do preliminary research before they meet with you. They will look at your neighborhood to see what has sold in the last 3-6 months in your area that is similar to your home.

When they meet at your property they will look at the features/upgrades of your home. They will do a (CMA) Comparative Market Analysis to give you an estimate of what your home is worth today.

Feel free to contact our office at [phone removed by Zillow moderator]. If you are out of our area that we service, we can provide you with some names to contact.

Sincerely,
Kirk Vaughan
