I am not sure what your credit score is now, in my experience based upon my credit report and my wife's credit report its easier to go up when you have a lower score than when you already have a decent score.   For example it was easier to go from 500 to 560 than 560-620 etc...I found fist by paying off all your collections and bringing everything up to date will dramatically improve your score.  When we were paying off my wife's collection accounts every couple of weeks it would go up.  After we finished paying off her bad accounts we opened up a secured credit card and that really improved her score.  I also second talking to a lender.  Our lender went over everything we should do to bring up our score.  Make a budget so you pay your bill on time too!
