how do you find out what the crime rate is in the neighborhood you are looking to buy in?

Im looking to buy in a town where crime is really bad in areas and not so bad in others. Im not too familar with the area ive been looking. And would like to see if I can get a report to tell me how the neighborhood is like.

There are also some tell-tales: lots of grafitti; idle young men in groups of 3 or more; security bars on the windows; stripped cars in the neighborhood; phone booths; above normal police cruisers; a multitude of liquor stores and check-cashing storefronts; lots of pedestrian traffic; busted street lights; etc. etc.

Drive through at night and trust your gut -- that'll inform you. Keep the doors locked.

Reported crime rates are sometimes iffy. That might be skewed by a wide zip code or other neighborhood designation. For example, here in Reno we have about an eight block area around Montebello Street that is notorius but the stats are relatively mild because they embrace a wider geographical area.

In the Salinas, Monterey County,CA area you can go to http://crimereports.com/ to view the activity over a period of time.   Data comes from the Salinas PD.  The site offers info for other areas but I think it's dependent on whether or not they can get the data from the local PD.

Lisa you can go to any local Police Department and ask for a free crime report.

The best thing you can is to go directly to the police station and ask to view their activity logs. Some will charge a small fee but it will clearly give you an overview of what crimes and activities are in and around your neighborhood of interest

Go to www.homeresearch.com and click on the community information button on top of the site. You'll then enter the zip code of the area you wish to know about and the statistics will be generated for you to look at.

East Salinas is known to contain the roughest neighborhoods. Most of North and South Salinas are pretty good.

I recently found about a website http://www.spotcrime.com/

Do not know how reliable the information is. So please trust the information at your own risk. Seems to be an updated site, as i was able to spot a crime in my area that happened last week.

Also your local police department website can have a crime mapper.

And as always you can go to the precinct to get a report of the neighborhood you are planning to buy the house in.

In Portland oregon we have www.portlandmaps.com.  This has a funtion that will tell you about the crime in the area.  Your local city should have a simular web-site.  Try looking up GIS ( your city)  this should get you some results.
