Because there has been new activity in this thread, I wanted to update my previous response with new tools that are available. First, remember this is just a do-it-yourself method for looking at title activity. It does not substitute for a professional title search, which you should have a legal expert advise you on prior to any purchase.

Cook County now has a much easier tool for finding property info, including tax data and recording activity. Simply go to http://www.cookcountypropertyinfo.com and enter the PIN (if you have it) or Street address. The property report has a section titled "Documents, Deeds, and Liens", and a link to the County Recorder. (The link is currently not working 100%, so you will need the PIN to re-enter it on the Recorder's site).

If you do not have the exact address, the Cook County GIS viewer is a great tool. You can find that at http://cookviewer1.cookcountyil.gov/jsviewer/index.html

I'm not sure about doing yourself, but I've had great experiences with [Promotion and website removed by Zillow moderator.]

Here's how I do-it-myself in Cook County.

1) Go to the Assessors mapping site http://cookcountyassessor.com/data/gis.asp

2) Plug in the address (or range) you are interested in

3) Note the PIN of the parcel you want title info on

4) Go to the Recorders website http://www.ccrd.info and enter the PIN in the PIN Search

5) Results will show you everything recorded with that PIN, including deeds (transfer of title) and liens (mortgages, mechanics liens)

Of course this does not qualify as a full title search, but it is a good start. A good Buyer Agent can walk you through this and help explain the nuances.

The cook county recorders office is at www.ccrd.info or you could hire a tiltle insurance company to do it.
