Rick and Bedlam - this question refers to the Local Expert badge that agents "earn" here on Zillow.

How to be listed as a Local Expert? Fake it! It's cheap, fast, and fun!
Honestly, having more listings or less, time licensed long or short, a brand new Cadillac or a used Pinto, do not make or not make one a local expert. Granted, someone who has a great portfolio of work is likely to know more than others, it is no guarantee.
Best is to get and stay educated, be a teacher to your clients and always be growing. In our city, our association has put together an Ambassador Series; here agent attend twenty or so 1-2 hour presentations by various people in the community (city manager, mayor, water department, school management, history buffs, art museum, symphony, opera, police, etc) and when an agent completes 15 or so of these they get an Ambassador Certificate to hang on the wall. You really do learn a lot that helps with initial visits. One medical school here requires an Ambassador grad to show doctor hires houses.
Are you an expert if you couldn't recognize a good CMA in a well lighted room? Are you an expert if you have zero idea of the condition of your local market's supply/demand?
Most of the "Lables" we see are mere farces.

I would join as many social media sites as possible. Also, I was able to ask a local paper if I could write free articles and they said it was okay.

Caveat... let's look at a "local expert" HoustonRE. He has posted over 2400 photos of other people's listings, doesn't work for those companies or the company he has listed on Zillow, has never given any advice or posted any of his own questions/comments, says he has 8 years experience but completed his first re class in 2007, hasn't posted anything since July 2009 and has no listings! And he is local expert??!! The local expert is a faulty system that rewards others for piggybacking off the rest of us. It hurts everyone including those who are the true local experts.

its Q&A in the zipcode or city, you have to use the filter options and then post relevent, helpful info for people whose questions arent ancient and demonstrate knowledge of the area.

I had been wondering about that earlier, because I am advertising on zillow for my employer, when one day he just became one! I don't know how it happened, but I'd love to so we can do it with the surrounding cities!

Good luck with this. Their advice is to be 'active' on Zillow. I've been active for 4 years and contributed more than any agent in my zip code. A zillow sales rep calls me every couple of months to sell me a showcase ad. My response has always been, make me a 'local expert' and I'll consider it. Several nice ad reps have told me how to do it (contribute to the q&a) however the local experts in Dallas haven't contributed and I have. There are local experts with 1 listing and 0 contributions.
No one seems to have the magic answer to this perplexing issue. If zillow wants us to take them seriously and spend our time contributing to their site, they need to take a look at this 'local expert' program.
