The price varies upon a couple of factors:

1.  What is the pitch of the roof?
2.  What type of shingles are you using?
a.  3-Tab Asphalt / Fiberglass
b.  6-Tab (Architectural) Asphalt / Fiberglass
c.  Weight of shingles / Warranty
3.  Location in the country?

I'm a homebuilder in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.  We typically always use 6-tab architectural shingles - 240 lb 30 year asphalt shingles.  We pay $128 per square for an 8:12 pitch roof for materials and labor.  The price goes up $1.00 per square for each increment in roof pitch.

You should be able to contact a local roofer in your area and ask them what they charge per square.
