It obviously depends on what one is adding, and what type of construction and amenities.

Typically anywhere between $50 per sqft and $300 per sqft.  Smaller additions typically cost more per square foot.  Similarly, kitchens cost more per square foot than a storage room or play room.

You do want to try to maintain some consistency with the existing structure style and architecture.

Roof lines also can have a major impact.

And adding second stories can have a major impact on existing footings quickly running up the costs way beyond the general range.
