Usually the wiring in a 1960's house is romex and it will generally be in decent shape unless someone has tampered with it over the years.  The other concern would be if you need dedicated circuits for a theater room or something but often you can accomplish that by replacing an electric appliance with a gas one such as a dryer and then you can split the unused circuit into two dedicated circuits.

WOW I cannot believe I just read that.  If you do happen to follow Philip the loan agents advice I hope you get a loan through his company and forgo the fire insurance and have him cosign the loan.
I cannot believe someone gave you advice to hire some unqualified people to do something on the side without license or insurance.

On the other side of life,...
Get some estimates from qualified electrical contractors.
Check out the contractors with the state license board prior to calling.
Look for an electrical contractor that has been around more than 10 years.

call in a big company to rewire a box. meet the electrician. they all work on the side. get one to do it for you on the weekends. they usually work in pairs and charge 165 an hour for both. should cost around 2500 plus parts and permits. you pull the permits. they sign off on them.they make a mess so expect to patch drywall and repaint.
if you use the company they will charge around 20 to 30,000.
Also if you hang out at the electric dept at home depot. small electricians will be there. you can ask there, too.
Only replace the wires that have that black crumbly insulation. remember not to use that spray insulation on the old wires. the old wires need to breathe.

I would guess 15-20K and that would include a new panel.  Procing varies by area, but i recently had (3) rental units re-wired (2 studios, 1 2 bedroom house) for 12K (included 3 new 100 amp panels).  But as florinm points out, it depends on many factors.

Good luck!
