Valuations differ from county to county.  In Dutchess County NY market values are used from a fiscal, not calendar, prior year to determine a valuation.   Most counties offer forms on their website, however, you should contact your local assessor and find out what criteria they request and when the deadlines are.  It's really not as daunting as it seems.

Hi, Lavrig.  Contesting taxes is not as difficult as most municipalities would have you believe.  It's actually a matter of obtaining home sales for the last six months, usually three to four are required and completing the paperwork required by the town.

What most towns require is 3 comparable sales to justify a lower value for your home.  You can also hire an attorney to assist you, but call your local municipality and see what they need to consider your property for a lower assessed value.
You only have a few months to get it done.
