If you're unsure of your credit score, you can Google-Annual Credit Report and get your free copy of your credit report. If your middle score is below 620 you have work to do before you can buy a home.
Your credit doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to indicate to the lender that you have demonstrated a willingness to repay your obligations.
We're in a "credit crunch" and lenders are placing a greater weight on "acceptable" credit.

Well I guess that all depends on how bad your credit is. If you don't know what it is, you can try this credit score estimator here for an idea of what it might be. If your credit is bad, you can target specific areas to improve it. That will raise your chances of getting a loan and lower the cost of your mortgage too.
