I am a landlord who rents to section8 and non section tenants. The process is fairly simple. YOU chose where you want to live in the town or city that issued you the voucher. Sometimes, you can move to a town that is different from the one issuing the voucher.

If you are new to town or are simply not sure about the different areas, you can stop by the local police station and ask the officers about crimes in each part of the city. You can also ask your case worker for advice, ie: comments/ complaints from other section 8 tenants. also, simply drive around the areas that you are interested in.

Once you find an apartment that you like, and a landlord willing to accept section8 tenants ( some landlords including myself have had bad experiences with some section 8 tenants who either do not pay their portion of the rent - even when its as low as $80/month, do not maintain the apt in sanitary condition or have unauthorized "guests" so some landlords refuse to rent to section 8 tenants) the town housing authority will schedule an inspection. You can only move in after the apt passes the inspection which is fairly rigorous.

Good luck with you search!

This question is very vague and subjective.  In order to property and legally Section 8 your home check with the city or county first to see if the home qualifies and if it does, the next step if having an inspector tour the property by giving you a checklist of items which need to be made to the property before legally renting out the house to prospective tenants using Section 8.
