i want to challenge the tax appraisal value of my home since property values have declined

Profile picture for Coinhunter
I want to challenge the tax appraisal value of my home since property values have declined so dramatically. They are still taxing me for the over inflated value from 2007. How do I do this? I am in Seymour, Tn. in Sevier County.

Just grab your favorite Realtor to print of a CMA and take with you to your appointment with the local tax assessor office! They will usually give you a form to fill out which the CMA will make much easier to tell them what YOU think the value should be...but remember-if you go down this avenue make sure you aren't wanting to sale soon because then you will want the value to show more!!!!

Perhaps Zillow.com can provide you with a history of the value of your home as evidence you were overtaxed in the years 2008-2010?

In Sevier County, the reappraisal is not complete.  You will get notice in the spring regarding your adjusted value.  If you do not agree with the value, you can call and have an informal hearing to present your case.  In the event you do not get the relief you seek, you can schedule an appointment to go before the local board in June.  If you still do not get the relief you seek, then you will be provided further information about appeal at the State level.

Until you get your revised value, you should probably sit tight.  If, when you get the notice, the value does not seem consistent with your opinion of value, I suggest having a licensed real estate appraiser provide you with an evaluation.  This will give you some indication as to where an appraisal of your property would come in.  Compare that result with the revised value from the County; if there is a drastic difference, I then suggest obtaining an appraisal, which can be used as evidence that (a) you are serious about the challenge, and (b) can be used as evidence further down the line.

Where we live, thousands of tax grievances are filed every year.
You can do it yourself, but we usually recommend hiring a professional.
They do all the work and get paid a portion of your first years savings when and if you win!

Hi there,

Each county has a Tax Assessor.  If you contact your city or county they can give you the instructions for doing  a "Tax Assesmnet Appeal".  Once you have filed an appeal for review, the County will submit your home for the  process  and begin the re-evaluation your assesment. One note though, just becuase your appeal your assesment, does not mean that the County will change it's findings!

Hello! You can contact your local tax collector and request to have your home reassessed.  Also, if you have comparible homes that have sold in the past 4 to 6 months that are of equal size and amenities, within your community, you can present them to the county appraiser when they visit your home to re-evaluate the value.

I Hope this was helpful,
Chelie
