I'd say the first step is find an agent, then a lender. In part because most agents have lender recommendations to people they have worked with multiple times.

While you get to know the agent and the agent gets to know you (and what you desire in a home) you'll be collecting the information your lender will need to pre-approve you. Don't just get pre-qualified, get pre-approved. It's like walking around with a blank check so that when you see something you want you can ACT on it right away.

If you need an agent in the Rushville area and don't know one I'd be happy to help you find one who knows what they are doing and not one that got a license last month because they "like to look at pretty houses"

Sincerely, Pamela Howell

First of all you need to see if you can qualify for a loan (mortgage) to buy a house.  You will need to contact a lender in order to do that.  Once you are pre-approved for a loan (mortgage), then you will contact a realtor to help you find a house in your price range, etc.
This is very basic and there are steps in between but it gives you an idea and which order you need to do things.

This article here lays out the basic steps for buying a home. There is also a good article here on how to qualify for a mortgage. And Zillow has a "How much can I afford?" mortgage calculator here that might help you run some numbers to see what fits into your budget. Hope the links help.
