Dave is right! In the NY area we have several non profits that have classes to help you with your credit. Check out HUD for a list.

NACA here did have some workshops like that and HUD here also has a a lot of good information. I believe that they also have first time buyer classes. They talk about credit improvement, but you can get a lot of great information on making your credit better from other places.
You might start by getting a copy of your credit report. One credit report a year is free from the credit reporting agencies here, but you will have to pay a small amount for your actual credit score. You can get strategies to improve your score here and here. The myfico site also has a break down of what makes up your score and what you can do to improve it for free. Focus on making yourself a good candidate to buy before you buy. Hope the links help.
