To consider purchasing a house, you should have three things...

    A 620-or-higher credit score
    A reasonable DTI (debt-to-income) ratio
    Money for the down payment and closing costs

These are minimums. If you don't have all three, then you're going to have problems even if you somehow get into a house. It may not seem like it now, but consider that right now you're being protected from a bad decision. Work on getting all three in place, and you'll be much more likely to be a successful homeowner.
