To picture what an acre looks like, 1 acre is equal to 43,560 sq. ft. How much you can sell a piece of land depends on whats available in the land. Do you have utilities, is the road paved, does it have access or do you need an easement. Is the entire 1 acre buildable or sloped and where is the location (urban or rural). Contact a Realtor to assist you with this transaction.

harrietb1, one thing you may consider discussing with an attorney is how the property was willed to you and your sister.  I'm not sure how things work in NC but, in Washington state there is a provision which allows for a testamentary subdivision.  In a nutshell, a testamentary subdivision actually subdivides the property into legal lots which may be conveyed separately (without having to go through the platting process).  Now, legal lots is not synonomous with "building lot" or "tax lot" - three terms which are, all to often, confused by many people (and brokers!).  This is something which would need to be researched further but, start with the attorney.  Also, just because a house might be a "tear down" doesn't mean it doesn't have value.  Although many people/brokers will speak to the associated costs of removal of the structure (and rightly so), they often fail to mention some of the benefits which may offest those costs.  Things such as credits for school/road mitigation fees may be entitlements that get lost in the scuffle but are, nevertheless, value-ads which should not be overlooked.

Zillow only does Zestimates on residential property, so the best way to get estimates for the property in question is to talk with two or three real estate agents in your area.

Condolences on loss of your mother.
