Thanks for the update. It sounds like it was a lot of work and living in a remodel is definitely challenging. The best part is finally getting your finished house back and I bet that it turned out beautiful. :)

Thanks to those that replied to my post.
We did hire a Design-Build Company, Turner Troxell in Towson MD. They did an outstanding job!
I had an awful feeling the job was going to be big and in fact it was.
We ended up having to re-build our family room on the first floor, then build a master suit, walkin closet, bathroom, on top of that, and re-designed the entire second floor. It was a challenging few months, but it was worth it.
Everyone comments were useful. Thanks

You can use either outlet but a Designer will only get you so far. If you hire an architect then you can get both the design work and the final construction documents from the same company and will end up with a smoother process in the long run. It will end up being cheaper that way also.

http://www.houzz.com/ is a wonderful source of inspiration to help you develop your needs and wants.
Whether you hire an architect, designer, or both will depend on the skills of the professional you hire and the scope of the project.
Because your home was built before 1941, hire a contractor who is EPA lead-safe certified. Learn more here: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovaterightbrochure.pdf

Hello, I work for an architecture firm in the Seattle area and have a Bachelor of Architecture degree along with 15 years of actual construction experience. I often do side projects in my area, so depending on where you are the possibility exists to get someone who has adequate experience do a good quality job for you. This could save you money in architectural fees. The most important thing to remember is to always check references and never go with the first person you come across. Good luck

Check out this site, www.avaliving.com. You can get free reviews of your room from designers to test drive them before deciding whether to hire them or not. Good luck.

You could consider one of my contracting companies, based in Randallstown - Cirs Construction. Contact information can be found on their website - I have been pleased with all of the work they have done for my clients. Please tell Luis that I sent you.
You may need to hire an architect (Luis has a few that they have worked with) to help secure permits if you are moving walls. Also, be sure to ask if they are RRP compliant - new rules about remodeling work done in homes built before 1978.
Good luck!

You could use a designer (draftsman) for the plans and permit.
Architects usually have their own "style" so you have to find one that fits your concept of a finished product.
An interior designer could be helpful in picking out the interior finishes.
