The best thing you can do for yourself is to get educated about the process by taking the "Finally Home" home buyer education class. It is a six hour course that teaches everything from how to budget, loan programs for first time home buyers, title insurance, FSBO vs. Realtor, home inspections, insurance, etc.
I am one of their Real Estate instructors so feel free to contact me with any and all real estate questions. I have been a Realtor here for 20+ years, so odds are I will have answered the same questions many times before. My motto is "if you had a all the answers, I would be unemployed".

Questions are expected in real estate transactions, so ask as many as you can think of before commiting to a realtor and of course, a property. I would suggest hiring an ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative) that you feel comfortable with and who will commit to representing your best interests. Good luck.

Ask as many questions as it takes for you to made an educated decision. However, when you find the right agent for you, I suggest committing to them so that they will also commit equally.
If an agent doesn't give you the time of day, return the favor and don't give them the time of day either.
I take the approach like the doctors and attorney's take . . . free consultations so you can ask your questions.

Look at houses and ask lots of questions. Don't sign anything! Look at numerous houses listed by different realtors. You might find a realtor you have confidence in and feel comfortable with. Some realtors will ask you to sign an Exclusive Buyers Agency contract right away ... you don't have to do that to be shown a house. Go to open houses and talk with realtors, but don't sign anything that will commit you to one realtor.
Ask family, friends, relatives, co-workers if they have used a realtor they were comfortable with. Ask lots of questions here. You will find a realtor and you will find a house ... be patient.
Feel free to ask a lot of questions here ... you will soon find out who gives honest and helpful answers.

Absolutely ask questions. In fact, interview several agents and ask as many questions as you need to clarify the buying process. It is okay to be scared. It is a big purchase you are about to make. Good luck!

I agree with some other posters. An agent is a salesperson who earns his.her income by making a sale. This is not the best person for educating you in the process. Start by clicking on Dan the country hick's profile and reading a number (if not all) of his links in his profile.

Be scared. Very scared. Be scared as long as you are uninformed about the RE industry. A home will most likely be your biggest investment and you will have to work with two selling agents

Do not talk to an agent till you have well understood the buying process. Agents are good sales people so you want to approach them with caution and a poker face.

Of course you can ask questions! You have plenty of rights as a buyer! There are no bad questions! You have the right to inspect the property and back out of the contract (within 17 days) if the property doesn't meet your standards.
You can offer on multiple properties. You have the right to ask for repairs. You have the right to ask for money out of your loan to be applied to your closing costs!
Ask someone you trust to recommend a real estate agent and if you have the time interview several. Find someone that you feel good about and match's your personality. There are plenty to choose from here on Zillow!

Yes, of course. Zillow advice is a free for all, some good info and some bad info but you'll often get a lot of it! The perspectives are diverse, and that is good for the learning process.
