If its a landlord Google them and also look up the owner on the tax info for your area see if it's the same person.

Good Luck,
Jon

Tim, I've been doing rentals for 28 years now here in the DC area. Always work with a professional. I could go on with a long list of reasons why. There are so many scams online it is amazing to me how few people really understand that and that's exactly why the scammers are out there. Your gut is probably right about this situation.
When you work with a professional you are looking at properties that are listed with professional companies that must comply with the law.
When you look online you are probably missing properties that are listed but have not been listed on Zillow. Most people don't realize that the homeowner must authorize there agent to advertise on websites other than the MLS or MRIS. When this happens you are missing a large percentage of properties that may be perfect for you. Anyway, use a pro and stay out of trouble.

As much as the landlord wants to interview you - you should interview the landlord.

Scams have been showing up every where.  I was just alerted through a Zillow contact of one going on with Craigs list in my market.

Having a Realtor help you is not a bad idea.  They may have access to properties you are not even aware of.

I think everybody should check out the Scam Detector app. I believe they're online as well.

Have you had a chance to read Zillow's FAQ on scams and internet fraud?

Is Zillow secure?  While Zillow keeps putting more and more hoops to keep scammers out, Zillow (like all other internet real estate sites) is seeing a lot of scammers.  The consumer should always be cautious.

If you are convinced it is a scam, please report it.

There has been stories of rental scams everywhere.  If the story doesn't sound coherent, then it probably isn't.  Have you thought about securing the help of a real estate agent?  It doesn't cost you anything and you get the advice of an expert who has the right tools to save you time and headache.

Good luck in your search.
