Profile picture for kayek
We had a problem with red dirt washing onto the driveway and now it is stained . Is there something I can do to remove the stains?

I would go with a concrete dye and color your entire driveway red. I might look pretty nice.

I had thought of that...actually it is close to a nice terracotta color now! But not consistent ...maybe I should just mix a paste of mud and put it on the driveway and leave it for a couple of days...that should do the trick. LOL Seriously, I will look into that.

If they are surface stains muriatic acid should take care of them. Just pour pure muriatic acid on it, let it bubble then hose off thoroughly. But be careful, if you get it on yourself, it will burn your skin off.

My concrete contractor (40 years in the business) recommends using white distilled vinegar to get the discoloration out of regular concrete.

Thanks to all...have a power washer and will try the vinegar first before the more dangerous muriatic acid.

One other thing you can try that isn't as harmful as muriatic acid if the spots aren't too large is to make a paste out of laundry detergent. I'm not sure if one that has a bleach/bleach alternative makes any difference, however I'm certain it works very well on oil, transmission, etc. type spots. Can't be sure if this will work for your red mud or not.

I got some stuff at home cheapo that did the trick on my concrete wall.. I think it was that "ZEP"stuff.. anyway I let it sit there for a while and all was clean again..

I'm afraid to mess with muriatic acid - just my luck I'd end up with nubs of bone for fingers.. lol

Hey Justyn,
What's that acid/substance that eats through concrete? I know we don't want that here, but since we were on the subject of acids..

I remember in high school the kids wanted to race in the parking lot or something and decided to "get rid" of the speed bumps. Apparently someone put something on them and it sure ate a lot of it away..

Wow!

The hearth of my fireplace in my new house is a protruding piece of grey concrete. It's gotten spotty stains on it over the years. The ideas above look intriguing...but I'm worried about the phrase "bleaching".

I don't want to make it worse by creating white spots where there are stains now. Will the vinegar, laundry, muriatic acid solutions truly bleach or just pull the stains out. Is the word "bleaching an accurate representation? I imagine that would be a less big deal on a driveway than a hearth. Thanks.

Okay...how about getting wood stain off concrete? Our contractor was staining our new front door & the can of stain fell onto the concrete...left a huge area stained brown. Haven't a clue what to do...any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
